Are you guys gearing up for the festive season ahead? When my international readers are getting set for thanksgiving, my Indian counterparts are planning for an elaborate festive season with dusshera and diwali coming up. Here is one festive decor that never goes out of fashion – lights. I have a simple tutorial to make these pretty paper lantern using very basic supplies but not here!Oh and also if you are looking for more diwali idea like diwali diya painting, tealight decoration, paper lanterns, diy aakash kandils etc, do not forget to check them out all on this blog under the tag “Diwali” 🙂

The procedure is very simple. In fact when I saw these on pinterest, I wasn’t sure of the measurements and I had to go through some trials to get them right. I have a printable template which you can print as such on a sheet atleast the size of A4 paper and follow instructions from the post on how to assemble them. For those who do not have printer, I have also mentioned the measurements on the printable so like I did for this project you can draw out the template yourself and make these pretty paper lanterns.

For the colored panels here in the lantern, I have used colored vellum sheets that I found online on thecraftshop.in. But alternatively, you can use any colored paper or even the glass sheets because when you put a lamp inside the paper lantern, it doesn’t matter what type of paper you use.

Anyways enough with the chit chats. The entire tutorial with step by step photos is shared at Sharon’s The Key Bunch but you can also download the template here at the end of the post. Also I tried a similar lantern with paper weaved colored panels and I am sure it would be a different style to try out 🙂 Check out the tutorial for the weaved lantern here.

  2. Hi Angela,
Loved your post. Thanks for sharing it I’m going to make this lanterns for Diwali. I just had a query, I’m not sure if I missed something but what are the black lines ? Is that any paper you have sticked or it is done with marker ? It would be great if you could help me with it
    Thank you

    1. You mean the black lines in the lantern picture thats lit up? They are just shadows cast within becasue of the layers of papers stuck inside 😛 Plus I had drawn all the cutouts with pencil before cutting them out so possible that its that marking also!
