  • Watercolor round brushes
  • Cardstock
  • Black fineliner pen

How to Start Painting Your Cards

1. Beginner watercolor project 1 – Heart Wreath Card

Step 1: Create the Outline
Begin by lightly drawing the wreath outline with a pencil or print the provided outline in a gray shade. This will serve as your guide for placing the elements within the wreath.

Step 2: Paint the Roses
Visualize the placement of roses evenly around the wreath and mark them with light pink circles. Once you have positioned the circles, load your brush with a bit more pink pigment and create two ‘C’ strokes at the center of each circle, followed by a dot in the middle. Don’t worry about making them symmetrical—the more random they are, the more natural they will look.

Step 3: Add Leaves

Next, choose a green shade and mix in a tiny bit of pink to create a harmonious color palette. Using a flicking motion with your brush, paint small leaves around each flower. Flick the brush from the end towards the flower to create natural-looking leaves. Continue filling the wreath with leaves, alternating between short and long strokes to add variety. Ensure all the leaves are aligned in the same direction for a cohesive look.

Step 4: Add Final Touches

Once the leaves are complete, add small pink dots in between to represent rosebuds and to balance out the colors. If you feel the greens are overpowering the flowers, this step will help distribute the colors more evenly.

Step 5: Add a Sentiment
Finally, use your black fineliner pen to add a heartfelt message in the center of the wreath to complete your card.

2. Beginner watercolor project 2 – Heart Garden Card

Step 1: Prepare Your Card
Start by taping off the center of your card with washi tape to create space for your sentiment. Next, lightly draw an outline for the placement of hearts and leaves in your garden design. Alternatively, you can print the downloadable outline onto cardstock.

Step 2: Paint the Hearts
Choose three complementary shades for your hearts—I went with orange, red, and pink. Use a light shade of these colors to fill the hearts, ensuring a soft and watercolor-like effect.

Step 3: Paint the Leaves
Just like before, mix a bit of pink into your green shade to tone down its intensity. Use the flicking brush motion to paint leaves from the end inward toward the stem. Fill in all the stems with leaves, and in areas with white gaps, add watered-down green shades to create a layered background effect. Ensure your final composition has a balanced, symmetrical shape.

Step 4: Add Details

Once the base is dry, outline the hearts with a slightly darker shade to define their shape. Get creative by adding tiny details such as dots, crisscross patterns, or mini hearts inside each one. These little embellishments will add charm and personality to your design.

Step 5: Write the Sentiment
Once your painting is fully dry, carefully remove the washi tape and use the black fineliner pen to write a meaningful sentiment in the blank space.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this beginner watercolor project tutorial for creating heart-themed cards! These simple yet beautiful designs are a great way to express your love through handmade creations.
