Hey crafty peeps! Been a long time since we sat down for a crafty session and I promise this time it’s big and satisfying 🙂

Gone are those days when free time used to be spent in something creative, be it cooking, painting, gardening or something crafty. These days every single minute of free time is spent on social media which is a bit sad. But not when you have me around 😀 This is something we haven’t shared before on this blog and its absolutely pretty. We are trying hands on fabric painting for the first time and that too for a pretty peacock feather printed curtain 🙂

So come on! Let’s sit down this weekend to make something pretty in a very simple way – fabric painted curtains!

  • Stencils in designs of your choice
  • Foam roller brush
  • Paper plate to mix colours
  • Brushes for acrylic paints

A bit about the fabric colours I have used : New Fevicryl Fabric colours :

I have used the new range of Fabric Colours by Fevicryl to paint these DIY Painted curtains. I loved the fact that these Fevicryl Fabric colours (made especially for use on fabric) are smooth and don’t need to be diluted! Available in 30 shades, they also don’t make the fabric stiff but retain the natural texture of the Fabric – which is amazing! I have always struggled with Fabric Painting using acrylic and these new paints are the perfect solution. Also, guess what? These paints don’t require ironing on the reverse side; colourfast in 7 days!

This DIY creation is also going to be my entry for the     Fevicryl Kalastar Contest  which I am super excited about – there are prizes worth Rs. 1,50,000 up for grabs for 100 winners! It’s a great way for artists to be recognized for their talent 🙂 For more contest details, read till the end – I have left links & all details about the contest 🙂 .

How to make DIY Painted curtains in peacock feather patterns :

Painting curtains needs a bit of planning because your canvas is a bit huge and you need to know what goes where perfectly. Especially if you are making a pair of curtains, planning helps in maintaining symmetry when you are finished.

I bought this running kantha fabric in off-white shade and I wanted my curtain to be floor length which means you need the finished curtain to be 2.1 meters long. Add an 8-inch margin at the top and bottom for stitching and then cut your fabric.

Before starting to paint, check if your fabric is starched and needs a wash cum iron before painting. A well prepared fabric helps in retaining the painting in its original form for a longer time.

For painting, you need your fabric to stay put, just like when you embroider, so that it doesn’t tug while you paint. You can clear your dining table and spread your fabric over it and secure it with corned clips. The design I chose did not need so much of filling so I used my hands to hold the area tight while painting.

So before diving right into the painting the DIY Painted curtains, finalize your design and mark where what will fall on. I was planning for a repeated pattern of peacock feathers so I measured the size of my peacock stencil and divided the curtain area into a grid with each cell holding one feather pattern each. Once this planning was done, I spread out my fabric on the floor with a scrap fabric underneath so that there was a cushion for support while I press over my stencil with paint.

I used a foam roller to transfer paint over my stencil. Since the foam soaks a bit of paint, I diluted the Fevicryl Fabric Colours a bit.

I used a paper plate to prepare my paint, rolled my foam roller over it a couple of times till I was satisfied and then transferred it over my stencil that was already positioned on my grid.

I ran the roller brush twice over the same area to have enough coverage & build-up of the paint. I repeated this process for painting the feather pattern in all my pre-marked up grids and let it dry overnight.

After it was completely dry the next day, it was time to paint the details in each feather. While using a stencil, it’s never necessary that you need to use multicolours over the stencil itself. With these newly launched Fevicryl Fabric Colours, you can achieve true color with less than two coats – whatever the background shade may be.

I took a peacock feather image from google for shade reference and picked up similar shades of Fevicryl Fabric Colours. I decided to add shades of blue and copper to further enhance my peacock feathers.

Layer one was Fevicryl Fabric Colour – Violet 225 from the bottom of the eye.

Layer three in the eye was a bit of a darker blue edge at the top with Fevicryl Fabric Colour – Turquoise Blue 222

I mixed two shades – a teeny bit of Cerulean Blue 222 with a lighter Sky Blue 263 to get this pretty bright but still light blue shade to fill in the outer are of the eye.

Last but not the least, the shimmer! If you notice a peacock feather, the shimmer is not truly a pure shimmer. It’s more of a greenish brown copper shimmer. For this, I used Fevicryl Pearl Metallic Colour – Copper 353 and painted a coat of copper shimmer over the green background. Remember that you don’t need a thick coat of Copper, but you should be aiming for a tinge of Copper with Green. So dilute the metallic colour well before application.

And here it is – my DIY Painted curtains! I absolutely loved how it turned out! Hope you enjoyed this DIY Painted curtains too.

I have done a couple of fabric paintings before so I started large scale. But if you are a beginner, I highly recommend painting on handkerchiefs or cushion covers for starters in simpler patterns so that you get a hang of how fabric paints work with brushes and over a rough flimsy surface like a fabric. Within one practice, you should be good to go for a bigger full-fledged project like these DIY Painted curtains.

You can then submit your fabric painting to the contest and stand a chance to be among the winning 100! I have explained the steps below in detail for your understanding:

  • Use the new Fevicrly Fabric Colours only to paint on any fabric of your choice (curtain, scarf, cushion cover, bedsheet, kurta, saree, t-shirt etc.)
  • Click an image of it and upload it on the Hobby Ideas India website.
  • Make sure that the blue cap paint bottles of Fevicryl Fabric Colours are visible in your image

Happy crafting and good luck for the contest 🙂

xoxo Angela 🙂
