I have been indulging in multiple festive craft pieces and first one to blog about is this mango leaf door toran.

Its a common practice in Indian especially to the south of India to decorate entry doorway of house with garlands of fresh green mango leaves during any auspicious occasions. Procedure to make Mango leaf door toran

This is a very simple craft and can be done using normal school / stationery supplies available from local stores. I think this would even make a great kids craft activity for this festive holiday season!

For starters, you need to chop out loads of carton boxes into leaves and flowers. I first drew a mango leaf plus five petal flower outline and made a template out of it from the carton pieces.

I measured the length of my door and decided the number of leaves and flowers that I would need considering that I needed about one and half inch gap between each of them. Once the required pieces were cut out, I pasted shiny color paper on them using diluted glue and paint brush on both sides.DIY Mango leaf door toran tutorial You could stick two leaves cartons together to make them more sturdy and also stick color paper only single side as you wish. I chose shiny green for mango leaves and gold for flowers on the mango leaf door toran.

For mango leaves, I then started drawing the veins freehand with help of fevicryl 3d outliner ( or you can use Faber Castell 3D Outliners ). They take a while to dry so you need to place it in clutterfree area for about 2 hours to completely dry. For the flowers, I punched out some small flowers in a contrasting color  (again in shiny paper) and threw some kundans here and there 🙂

Your mango leaf door toran is almost ready except that we need a base to hang them on. I cut out longer strip of carton ( again matching my door measurement + sag) and cut them to shorter pieces such that each piece will have one mango leaf each and the gap between each will have the flowers. ( You can design the position the way you like- maybe two horizontal leaves followed by two vertical flowers! as you please :))

I covered the rectangle pieces also with shiny paper and added some flowers here and there. Punched out two holes at the ends through which I pulled out matching satin ribbon ( 1cm wide) and made a train sort of thingy 😀 Leaves I adhered with help of glue while the flowers I hung to the satin ribbon with help of connecting rings ( that I bought for jewelry making years back but never used!)
