The tradition of onam has moved from a grand festivity to lonely onam in cities these days. Try out these onam crafts & activites to bring up the festive spirit.
As a child, I loved onam more so because of the long holiday and also because of the onam sadya and payasam. Onam was the only day in our lives when we used to have elaborate lunch on plantain leaf and it used to be so much fun. While our mother toiled in kitchen to make different variety dishes, we three sisters would be busy making onam pookkalam and improvising on it till afternoon! Those were the days!
My first post for Onam and this one is on how to make onam pookkalam design on paper, implement it on floor and some design inspirations for home and competitions.
Being a keralite its a shame for me that I have never done a post on Onam so here it goes. Onam is the state festival of Kerala and most of the offices & schools get a weeks holiday for the celebrations. Since I am here in Karnataka, I am working even on Onam day and my celebration stops with onam pookkalam in the morning. A bit about the mythology behind onam festival :

Do you hoard craft supplies because you thought you could make this but never actually get around making it? Yeah happens to me all the time with my brain buzzing with so many ideas when I see supplies but eventually once I buy them, they get pushed to my cupboards 😀 This time they are embroidery supplies that I purchased to of course hand embroider pretty stuffs for my daughter’s dresses. But alas she is so grown up and I never did anything with them! Time to make tassel earrings out of them then! I have seen these tassel earring tutorial everywhere on the blog-land but when I actually tried making them I realized there can be so many variants and so here is mine 🙂
